Even though this video is done in a elementary classroom, the main points are the same. This is a good example of how to explain inferring to students as well as how to do a inferring lesson.
|
This video would be used to review what inferring is and how to use it while reading. It demonstrated using the five senses to make inferring and related them to text and the characters.
|
Definition: Readers use the clues within the text to figure out the
meaning.
Purpose: For students to learn how to understand that was it written in text, might not always mean exactly what it says, same for speaking. Students need to look for clues and figure out the meaning, purpose, or idea behind a text without it being stated in clack and white. This strategy incorporates high critical thinking skills and pushes students to understand the text deeper.

Tips:
- Allow students (in younger grades) to use magnifying glass
- Act out how to be a detective
- Use graphic organizers
- Model first time
How the strategy may be used in a lesson:

Writing Component:
For inferring there are different writing activities a teacher can do with his/her students, some are shown on this page as well as in the links below. Teachers can decide how to use writing in an inferring lesson, however it is easy to be done. In the example on the left it is making students state what clues from the text and or their prior knowledge helped them make an inference about the text. Having student write an inference down and not just think about it as they are reading helps them recall how they related to the book and how they figured something out when reading.

Resources/Research:
Marzano- According to Marzano, teacher students how to make inferences and what an inference is a necessary skill that will be need in the 21st century. Since our society is ever changing and students are learning more about technology and skills that they need to be successful in the future, it is important that teacher prepare them. Inference is a foundation skill for reading comprehension, however it will be a prerequisite skill student will need for higher-order thinking and 21st century skills in the future which make it important to teach students and use now.
Phillips- This study identified the inference strategies and is done using data and grade six readers. It states that inferring requires a lot of complex skills. It state that in order for students to construct a model of the text and understand the meaning they use different problem-solving methods to figure it out. Their final data shows that when students are inferring and reading between the line they can comprehend the text better than simply just reading to get done.
